Who, What, Why?
SciBar - literally science in a bar!
'Very interesting and enjoyable, easy to engage and understand...'
'I didn't know any of it beforehand but I found it very accessible...' Are you interested in science? Do you want to find out more about the research that is taking place within your local university or industry and get the opportunity to chat to specialists about their work? Then Bollington SciBar is for you! What is SciBar? SciBar invites an active researcher or expert out of his or her office and put into a bar or cafe. The specialist delivers a short introduction into their work, the background behind it and where it is going. This isn’t a lecture but rather a way to get the ball rolling for a discussion and the audience are welcome to put forward questions at any time. Once the introduction is over the floor is opened to general questions and discussion of the topic. SciBar meetings are set in informal surroundings where the discussions can take place while people enjoy a drink. They generally happen once a month. Who is it for? If you have a general interest in science (or one of the topics happens to grab your attention), it's a good place to learn a bit more, or to ask the questions you have always wanted answered. There is no prior scientific knowledge assumed and sessions are suitable for scientists and non-scientists alike. They are informal – you can chip in when you like and any level of question is welcome. What topics have been tackled by Bollington SciBar? During the first four Bollington SciBars we have discussed the science of wound healing, the wonders of antimatter, research into biological clocks and the effect of CO2 on global warming. Future speakers will be selected according to the requests of SciBar participants.
